intermitent starter problem

Post by fatpasty »

whilst on holiday, I couldn't get the camper to start, battery warning light, oil pressure light and heater coil light came on ,but the starter motor didn't turn. I called out the RAC. They said the starter motor was knackered, and towed me to a garage. |The garage ordered a new starter motor, and went to fit it the following day, only to find there was a loose lead which they reconnected and sent me on my merry way. A couple of days later again it wouldn't start, so I got it bump started and drove home. When I got home it would start. Any clues why some times it works and sometimes not?

Often it's the wire from the ignition to the solenoid on the starter (it's the thinner wire at the starter)
Often the spade connector gets rusty or the end of the wire degrades - try cutting the wire back an inch or so and adding a new spade connector

thanks mid life crisis, the spare connector was loose, so a few seconds attention with long nosed pliers, appears to have sorted the problem. Better than £200 to have a new starter motor fitted. it's a pity i didn't have the brains to try that when it first happened. :D

Probably pay you to fit a new terminal. Although it may have squashed up ok, old spade connectors get brittle and it may just part company. Stupid design when many other starters have a ring connector.
