I know little differences between CS and 1 y but understand gear ratios can be altered for better drivability and with less hassle for aged do it your selfer I have spent countless hours looking at all possibilities I know AAZ and the likes of Passats etc
are desirable but try find them ! ! Not to technical advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

Hi , I've no technical advice to offer but my panel van has a 1y in it with the original 5 speed box matched with the later 1.7 diesels which this van used to have. It feels like a really good combination. My only issue is not being able to cruise at 70-75 all day. Having said that it accelerates from 55 upwards really well and will sit at 65 comfortably. Beyond that it just doesn't feel right . It will do 70 but the revs are high.

I spent a day yesterday down in Telford at M V Engineering. The owner Mario is highly regarded by T25 diesel owners and his business seems to revolve around 1.9 tdi conversions and, T25 diesel maintenance, but he's familiar with all the diesel options. He gave it a full inspection (I've only had it a fortnight)serviced it, and sorted a few engine/exhaust items as well as taking it for a drive. He suggested there may be gearboxes which offer a bit more oomph for this engine but the highest ratio t25 boxes wouldn't work with a 64 hp diesel unit. He loved the current set up which drives well. All options to increase the power/reducing revs are expensive , except increasing rear wheel diameter which I may look at again.

For now I'm more than happy with my set up and I intend keeping the van for a long time, used as a camper and general use vehicle. I also have a run around car. I'm happy to cruise at 60-65 as it feels right and the pleasure of these vans goes beyond mere speed. In time I'll look at a tdi but from what M V told me that should be a good while at least in terms of the 1y going bang. If you have one on 83k then get it tuned, you may be surprised at how it performs. It's well worth speaking to Mario about this stuff too.

Thanks for response ANACONDA down your way all week and on w Kirkby beach Wednesday, hot! Nice part of the world travelled north to Penrith and purchased donor golf 1y engine documented 85k miles street legal drove back home here to west fife 170miles and very surprised by its performance regarding keeping pace up and down M6 and A74M without bother and well capable of over the legal limit I can get that speed kick from the car behind which my wife was driving ! ! Good to know that 5 speed box will work can sell CS and 4 speed as joined lump.Gear shift is probably original as 5 is taped over from your and Marios input a gearing upgrade seems to be the way forward any further tech advice would be grateful!

If I'm reading right I think you may have misunderstood about the gearbox. The 5 speed in the car won't work. You will need to retain your existing 4sp box, or replace with a higher geared unit from a t25. Although, as stated, the 1Y doesn't have sufficient power to pull a high geared box, and it would probably result in more downshifts at the slightest uphill stretch.
My wife's 8 seater Caravelle runs a 1Y 4sp set-up (pretty low ratio box), and it flies. Will do 70 when required but nicer at 60-65, and tows brilliantly (pulled our 4 berth shed on a 600 mile round trip to Scotland, no bother).

Yes I'm talking about the five speed which was the original gearbox in our van and is still fitted. Its a good fit for the 1y and like the previous poster says it creates a good bit of acceleration at all speeds. The downside is its low ratio which limits the top speed. Anything over 65 is a bit revvy but can be used for overtaking. A higher ratio T25 gearbox is possible (there were lots of different gearboxes) but the very highest ratio T25 gearboxes won't suit this engine, they're too high. The cost of a replacement slightly higher ratio gearbox or any other work to improve the top speed just isn't worth it. There would only be a marginal benefit. The engine has limits.

If youve got your 1y and need to buy a gearbox or find out if the one you have will be right...it's worth speaking to Mario.

Glad you liked Wirral!!
