Can I fit 185R14s onot Caravelle 205R14 alloy hubs?

Post by Binsy »

I have a Teka conversion T25 pop/hitop with Caravelle alloys wheels. They are fitted with 205/70R14 95H tyres.

I am struggling to find any replacement tyres here in Spain of the right size. I have been told to fit commonly available 185R14s instead but I am not completely convinced.

Does anyone know if it is safe to put these narrower tyres onto the alloy rims please?
Don't put it in the bin, I want to make something with it.

I will have a go at measuring the rim width - it is a little tricky as the tyres are still on them

If they are original VW fitment they will be 6x14, it will be stamped on the rim. Assuming that is right then 185r14 will be fine, 185r14 and 205/70r14 were the original sizes fitted. As an aside I am running 195r14 on 6x14 Atiwe pepperpot Alloys that were original fitment on my Microbus.

That is really helpful, thank you. I will go for the 185s in that case

If you can find 205R14 van tyres (note:- not 205/70/R14) they are quite a common tyre for vans and they are a bit taller than the "70" profile ones. I have them on my Caravelle (Carat) alloys. They raise the gearing slightly (~8% iirc) giving better mpg and lower revs at cruising speed, plus they fill the arches nicely and they give a good ride. Works very well on my fairly lightly loaded Tin-Top petrol camper, but the higher gearing might not be so useful on a heavy Hi-Top 1.6 Diesel type. Also, they make the speedo more accurate (checked via Sat-Nav).

E D I T = the 205/R14 tyres I refer to above are often listed as "205/80/R14" on the tyre selector thingies on tyre selling websites. I did try to find some for you, but despite my best attempts, using Google.ES etc, I just get UK results.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Many of the tyre sites sell across Europe - I've used Oponeo before, who are Polish but have both .co.uk and .es.

So...

Of that list, I'd be looking at the Hankooks or seeing if I could justify the extra for the Contis (and deciding I probably could).

It'll be cast into the alloy, probably on the back or near the bolt holes.
