Offer of used engine 1.6D

Post by tommin »

Yesterday I got offered a n/a engine (non turbo) 1.6D running and with no issues for a give away price :D to good to give up :D
Now for some help or advice, seeing as mine is a 1.6td with over a half million kms on the clock and all this smoke issues which i cannot yet solve. Can I use the n/a engine either on it's own or with my turbo and sump fitted. I have checked my engine and it does not have the extra oil feed on the head (only the one tube) and is the same code as this other engine.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom,as far as I know the 1.6d doesn't have oil squirters [to cool the pistons ] so fitting a turbo to the 1.6d might cause the engine to overheat!

It would be of help if you said what the common code is - CS, JX, SB etc. (If they are both CS neither are turbo blocks)

Sorry was a bit excited.... both are jx engines. As for the oil squirters I read on one of the er um other VW forums it is not an issue as long as you don't thrash it and better still if you fit an intercooler.....

This is the donor engine, just watched the video the dude sent me.

Has it got 'TD' cast on the side of the block? Have you read the engine no. yourself and it certainly starts with 'JX'? It is just that it is odd that a 1.6na is built with a 1.6td block - unless it is a frankenstein engine. (I know that it is possible as mine was as I replaced a CS block with a JX one myself as a temporary measure and the JX was handy but involved swapping crankshaft also and would have confused the heck out of anyone not knowing!)

Well what a bleeding knobhead I am, you both casted so much doubt in my head regarding these engines. I thought they were jx, so I gave them the 30th odd look over  here is the latest.

My own engine (1.6TD) the one I was having so much smoke issue (read relevant posts on that) which I was sure was a jx (it has the turbo, oil cooler, diesel pump 0460-494-152). On the back wall of the block it is stamped 1.6D and the cylinder head has only the one oil channel????????

This new donor engine (1.6CL) (No turbo, or oil cooler, diesel pump 0460-494-131) it also has the same 1.6D on the block but with the two oil channel head? Talk about confusious  My apologies to you both for not putting this relevant info out there in the first place.
regards
Tom

So neither engine has the oil squirters in the block for cooling the pistons. No wonder you are having problems with the current engine being used with a turbo!
You will have to use the new engine as a NA 1.6 unless you want to risk using it without the oil squirters but that might be the reason for the troubles with the current engine in the first place. Pity you aren't local as I have a spare bare JX block that could be refurbished.

ObG thanks for that offer and the info, much appreciated. I will drop the old engine and downgrade to the n/a engine, seeing as i have seen this running and no issues. Am in the process of disconnecting and labelling everything, just realised I did not take the air filter with the n/a engine, looking to use the one I have, probably need to swap inlet manifold to suit  Keep you posted.

Had a mad morning, did the stable work then decided to rip into getting the old engine out. Built a little support frame that fitted snuggly into the back door frame, added a little hoist to hold the engine up, undid all the bolts and bobs your uncle it came out with a grunt or two, drop it down with turbo and exhaust fitted......

I was in process of changing over the clutch which is new from my so called old TD engine onto the donor engine but they are totally different? They differ in size and protrusion, my old engine clutch protrudes around 7cm and the donor protrudes around 6cm. I am not sure if when fitted to the gearbox housing if it will work? Added some pics and welcome any thoughts on this issue.

I am confused - are you attempting to put the clutch from the original engine onto the new engine's flywheel? Just that I am not sure that you are measuring the same thing when you are measuring how much they protrude.
Do you mean that when you just change over the flywheel and clutch together from the old to the new the protrusion is different?

Sorry for any confusion. I was just saying that I was hoping to put the clutch from my old engine onto the donor engine (I thought they would be the same)? Now I know they are not the same I am just worried that the donor set up is not protruding enough or am I being paranoid  Do I need to change the flywheel and clutch from old engine or will the donor engines clutch and flywheel suffice :?

Usually you need to use your original engine's flywheel and clutch - eg my 1.9 1Y has the original 1.6 flywheel and clutch. The 1.9s clutch and flywheel went in the scrap pile.

Just a thought - check that the front pulley is compatible with the belt setup/pulleys that you are going to use. Whilst swapping round a couple of 1.6 engines I had a different nose on the crankshaft between them. I ended up swapping the crankshafts over to save getting a suitable pulley ( quite easy to do at the time as was in an engine stand)

:? Not really sure what you mean ObG, I see they are different, the donor being only one belt system apposed to the two pulley on my old engine. Does it make any difference?
