Looks lovely and a good price but what's that bit of tape doing around the choke heater connector?

The tape was me, to assist where I need to plug it back in, i.e. Another piece of Red tape on mating connector on wiring loom

Just as an aside question: how do these companies clean the outer aluminium? I used WD40 and wire brush but then got white crystallisation.

I'll guess Ultrasonic too, small enough item. For your engine I'd go with soda blasting.

Re: pierburg 2e3
I contacted Dellorto to find out about their reconditioning service for 2e3 carburettors and I was told that the carb was fully refurbished with all seals gaskets and diaphragms replaced but when asked about setting up and engine testing to identify if the faults had been cleared , I was told that NO that was not included in the service. Their statement was that it was assumed that when everything was cleaned and with parts replaced it should work correctly.
With critical settings for the pull down unit and actuator for cold start and the first step of the warm up, I find that hard to believe. Additionally, there are so many areas within the carburettor where blockages can occur it strikes me that any carburettor needs to be thoroughly tested throughout the cold, warming-up phase and finally at fully hot. Surely this is needed to ensure that the carburettor actually works correctly rather than hoping that it does.
For a 25 year old carburettor maybe I want too much.

Re: pierburg 2e3
I contacted Bromyard VW after Kevs post. Had a long conversation and was told that the carburettor would first of all be tested before any work was carried out in order to confirm that the symptoms that I had could be established and confirmed. If that was the case then it would be refurbished by a complete strip down and rebuild using parts meeting the original specification- not necessarily using new parts but had to meet original test requirements. After the rebuild it would be engine tested and confirmed that the carb was basically operating as it should, then set up with adjustment for the hot idle with an emissions test and then set up for the correct cold start. The following day it would be tested fully again from absolute cold and run through to hot to again confirm 100% correct. I would be given a copy of the emissions test results , together with work sheet of the faults and data sheet of 60 item check list for the finished carburettor.
Bearing in mind that I have taken the van to no less than 3 ‘specialists’, including the main dealer, previously to fix this and they have all failed miserably, this very much sounded to be what I wanted to happen. I paid £315 for a full recondition and sent the carb off. He gave me a set date for return and I received it back on the day together with comprehensive fitting instruction and all the test sheets. They showed that there were 8 faults. The carb looked fantastic, fitted it exactly to the instructions and it ran like a dream. The van has never run like that before. Cold start spot on, smooth warm up, good acceleration and a nice tick over at hot. I was well pleased. Thanks Kev

it's what we do here.
No thanks required but taken with respect.
I wish ALL traders offering a service were so meticulous.
Could I ask if you could post up the fault sheet and test data Edwyn?
