t25 accelerator getting jammed on full revs

Post by angelabbie »

hi am new here so please bare with me. I know nothing about my camper van but guess I am about to learn. The accelerator got jammed on full revs as I was driving along yesterday. Its happened a couple of times before when starting and I have gone into the engine and unjammed it but now I am loath to drive it as it scared the life out of me yesterday. Any idea how to stop this from happening. Also she does not like to start, when you turn the key it sounds very pathetic and sad and then after three or four trys she will put in the effort and get going. She does this every time so its not cold etc she could have a two hour run, pull in for petrol and do it.
Any help much appreciated by this daft girl who has only just discovered when the dipstick is.
Tina

Hi Tina:

Just try squirting some WD40 on every thing connected with the throttle, from the front to the back. It'll mean getting under the van as well, to look for the place where the cable ends at the front. If you just follow the cable you will find it. No guarantees but its amazing what a bit of oil can do. Enjoy!

Two seperate issues, stick the slow starting on another post and concentrate on the accelerator.
as suggested wd40 first to see if it's just sticking, when not running press the throttle repeatedly and see if you can replicate the fault. When doing this you will squirt excess fuel into the engine so leave it a day to dry out before trying to start.
Wd40 is not oil, so ideally wait a day for it to evaporate then add some spray oil back on.
it could however be a frayed cable somewhere, only a new one would fix that.

thanks everyone, its not an auto no. I will try the wd40, we have done this with the thingy in the engine and it still sticks. Will stick it in the shop next week and get the cable changed I think.

I agree totally, and to add, it might not be the cable.

If the WD-40 doesn't work, pull the sections apart one by one. I don't know what engine you have but think it as three sections: up to the beginning of the cable, the cable, from the end of the cable. If you can identify which section the problem is its cheaper to fix.

Do you know what engine & carberettor set up you have ?

If you are running a twin carb set-up you might find that the accelerator cable is attached to a bar/tube that bridges between the two carbs.

There is a return spring on the other side of that bar that connects to the bodywork at the rear of the engine bay.

Check to see if the spring is there, and not deformed & over stretched. If it's seen better days, time to invest in a new one. Super easy & cheap to change :ok

Just in case you haven't, here's a few ideas to get you started (Excuse the pun !):

Make sure the battery is charged and is in good condition.
Check any/all earth links are rust free & clean and make good contact with the body (Especially the one mounted on the gearbox link.)
There is a copper bush that lives in the bellhousing that often gets missed when starter motors are replaced. Cheap, but fiddly to replace.
There is an earth strap between the starter & the starter solenoid. Check for rust/dirt etc.
Check the starter isn't reaching the end of it's days. Leave this until you have eliminated the other factors as it's the most expensive to fix/replace.

Most have been covered in seperate posts on the forum, just do a search. :ok
