Can anyone tell me exactly what engine this is?

Can anyone tell me exactly what engine this is?

Post by kungfuontoast »

Hello all, complete newbie here!

I've just bought a 1990 Transporter with an odd conversion but I'm looking to do some work on cleaning the old beast up myself.

Could anyone tell me what this engine is? I was under the impression it was an air cooled engine but from what I find online it matches the description of the 1.9 dg water cooled?!

Comments will be hugely appreciated (providing it's not just calling me a ballbag for buying into something I know barely anything about!)

Thanks

James

 Thanks for the giggle - haven't heard that phrase for a while.

Good luck with your new van - once you've come to terms with looking after them they're quite addictive.

...and yes its a DG 1.9 unless someone has put a carb on a 2.1
Clean the vertical face of the boss that the breather tower stands on (the black vertical cylinder) to find the engine code and number.

Oh dear, you do have a learning curve to climb! Does it have a radiator at the front and a water filler tank at the back? If so it is water cooled ;) Sorry, just a bit of polite joshing there 8) As mentioned above by others, the pic shows a water cooled engine that needs a bit of TLC.

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm based between Swansea and Carmarthen. I'm going to take it out on it's first outing this weekend to the Gower because it's driving fine as is.

Starting next week, I'll be cleaning it up and getting my hands dirty - the real fun begins...

Please check the coolant level on the tank inside the engine bay is brim full, one behind flap should he half full, check oil and please stop if any lights come on.

All too often we see posts saying... a light came on but I kept driving, now it's overheated have I done any damage?

The inside tank was half empty (or full depending on your outlook) and the rear one dry.

Thanks for the invaluable advice I owe you a favour!
