Starter motor trouble bit of help required

Post by Dazco »

Im out in the sticks and my starter is playing up, I can get to a Gsf for a replacement later today but need to sort the right one.
I have a 1.9 DG engine , there page shows two different types 0.8kw and 0.95 kW .
Can anyone confirm which I will be more likely to have ?
Thanks
Or do you think It might be in need of a clean out etc ??

Depends on which type of gearbox you have.

The starters are for auto or manual.

Ok , ive got the van on the ramps and removed the starter, the shaft is rattling from side to side so I presume something like the bearing has collapsed within the starter. I'll be ordering a new one in a minute. I have a spare bush so will got that as well.

The shaft does rattle - it no longer has the bush to keep it straight.

If its not completely corroded up, undo the four screws holding cap in place, remove slide clip and washer then remove cap and see how much is left of brushes, whether commutator is blackened and if braided cable is in good order and properly attached. You may even find a clean of the commutator will restore starter.

When you remove cap, the rubber block that braided cable goes through makes it a bit tougher to remove cap but don't let that put you off. As long as above is removed, it just needs a little lever to get it off. It could be that brushes are worn right down. You can order those on ebay (cheap) and if you have a gas soldering iron (or can borrow one), you can fit new brushes. Up to you but its a LOT cheaper than another starter.
