Starter motor bush replacement

Post by REN »

Hi,
Got a very "lazy" starter motor which only just turns engine over (its been like that since i got the van 15 months ago). The van is used as my main daily transport and has only failed to start once during this time but its always a bit nerve racking at start up time!

So with winter nearly on us i guess its time to try and sort it.

Tried cleaning/replacing conections but still the same so i fitted a second hand starter motor, still no difference. Got the starter motor tested and was told its ok but the guy said its probably the bush in the bellhousing being worn forcing the main shaft of the starter motor to go offset whilst trying to engage with the flywheel (this is apparently quite common on Aircooled vw).

Well i suppose i should have changed it as a matter of course when i rebuilt the engine in August but the question is has anyone changed this bush through the hole left by removing the starter motor or has the engine/gearbox got to be separated?

Keith.

Soak the bush in oil, or squeeze oil into it with two fingers (oilite bush) before fitting...

the 2 genuine tools for doing the job are less £50 from vw and still available - if we had a tool pool they'd see some use I reckon - makes for easy job in situ; always replace the bush when doing clutch or engine swap ime.

I'd also remove, clean and replace the earth strap to the gearbox - some even put two on.

Tap It

Screw in a tap from a tap and die set, one that is just too big for the hole, what will happen as you screw it in is the brass bush will curl around the tap and work its way out. Works perfectly
