Split Pin horror!!

Post by nobbyfox »

I have been having a bit of a strange squeek from the rear for a few days and on investigating today found that the rear nearside wheel bearing was a bit loose
Nipped it up with the aide of the biggest bar I could find. Sorted. :D
Thought I would check the other side and found this...........

A bolt and nut!!!!

I have owned Dotty for 5 years now and do not recall that ever being there, however, in February last year Dotty went to an apparent T25 mechanic in South London for MOT which incidentally required rear brake overhaul.
Now I am not insinuating that this is the garage's handwork :? but if you noticed this bolt replacing a split pin, would you, as a professional 'mechanic' not consider replacing the bolt and nut.

Not happy

Well, I would imagine whoever fitted that had to drill the hole bigger? So a split pin wouldn't work after that mod, would it?

It's possible I suppose although the bolt is 5mm wide. Not sure the diameter of an unmolested one !
The eye of the split pin on the other side was large

Seems a lot of trouble to go to when a nail bent over would have sufficed.

What's wrong with a nut and bolt? They hold the rest of the van together
