Standing on wheel, holding on with one hand still hard to get stuff with the other hand unless you are tall.

also drove into a height barrier because I forgot it was there, used it for 2 years then gave it away

Your van would look good with one of the full length roof racks
Probably good for putting stuff you don't use much ie deck chairs, sun cream and bbq.

We use one when away for long trips, normally full of things that are not wanted in the van, dirty clothes, muddy walking boots, wetsuits, smelly bike gear, freshly caught fish if lucky, in fact thinking about it, I should put a toxic warning sticker on it, pity anyone who tries to brake in to it. We had our mounted further forward so you can stand on the passengers wheel arch with the door open to get at it.

plan is to put chairs tables/ scooters etc basically anything that cant be thrown around the van and cause damage to the kids etc !

Looks handy but I would worry that I might make same mistake as I did when installing a fold down ladder with our loft, it now contains not just lots of small items of junk but 2 kayaks, 3 bikes and a set of solar panels. I would probably overload the roof box with unwanted things whilst not in use thinking that it would do for an excellent temporary storage.

AFAIK UK roof boxes open on the pavement side so on a LHD bus you could fit a ladder on the pavement side as you have no sliding door but not on a RHD

My RHD van I had to close the sliding door to stand on the wheel to reach it, or move it forward and stand on a box we have placed in the van with the door open, either way hard to reach.

Big things are OK as you can grab them but smaller bits can get out of reach.

Don't forget the height barriers

This is our arrangement which we use for month long trips with four adults. Thule roof box and waterproof bag for roof above driver / front passenger.



Thule roof box is clever and will open on both sides so it doesn't matter which side you mount it. It takes loads of gear that you don't need on a jouney and don't want cluttering up the inside. I am a little under 6' and get to it via inside of the slider or off the back bumper. What I would really like is a Gary Lee ladder which stores in the pop top when it is down and is useful for all sorts of stuff but is prohibitively expensive from Canada with all the duties and taxes. Ours is always just about full.. Table, chairs, inflatable kayak, games, fishing rods, Nets ect ect.
