You need flat ground. Drive to your nearest airfield at night. Stop 4 or 5 metres short of a hanger door, but square-on to it, with the headlights on full beam. Get out, & measure the median headlight height against your body. It may be in the hip region. We won't mention any other body parts, this is a family forum (sometimes). Holding your thumb against your body at that height, walk across to the hanger door. Don't look back towards the van, you'll be dazzled. Assess the vertical beam spreads on the door for each lamp. Is your thumb half way up them? Walk back to the van & adjust the lamps until it is.

Repeat for dip. The cut-off should be below thumb height.

This is called rule of thumb.

Alternatively, garages (avoding main dealers of course) can be effectively cheap.

Drive right up to a wall or simlar with flat ground below.
Mark the wall where the centre of the headlights meet. Drive back 3 metres. Put lights on full beam, then adjust so brightest part of beam is just belo and centred with each mark. that is a rough and ready way to do it.
Best to make sure the adjusters are corrosion free and move easily. make sure the headlights dony waobble or move in their mountings. Then contact an MOT test station and ask them if they can adjust your headlights for you with their machine. Will cost half hour labour and the lights should be spot on. When you get back home do the wall thing again and see where your lights are in relation to the marks that you make and next time you need to adjust lights you can try and remember.
A tip also is to make sure you have headlights with H4 marked on the glass in the middle these are 10 times better than the older non H4 lights.
As they have a more tecnologically advanced beam pattern. Should be able to get your self a pair cheap enough. they are the same as Golf mark 1 and Euro curently sell them for £11 each new.
