is this possible? I'm thinking that I wont lose the ignition timing if I dont remove the distributor.
Your advice is welcome...

Much harder with it in the van as the vane has to come off and it can be stuck on.
I see your concern but if you don't have the timing checked then it could be out anyway.
A timing gun is not so expensive.
Anyway you can mark the position by scoring the clamp ring and dizzy to get it back in the same position.
