2 ltr air cooled, which oil ?

Post by darbydingbat »

Hi have just fitted a new engine and not sure what oil to go for . SAE 30 or 15w40 mineral. I have been looking at Tec specs and temp ranges for the both . The sae 30 seems as if it would be better in a warmer environment, being a bit thicker when hot but not so good for cold starting and the 15w40 would be better for colder starting but thinner at a hotter temp. HELP
Regards Paul...

15/40

Vw changed their oil recommendation from sae30 (single weight) to multigrades in the 70s :ugeek:

15W50 for Aircooled, similar viscosity to SAE30 when hot at air cooled temperatures. 15W to give good flow when cold and pump up the tappets quickly after a cold start.

15W50 is good for the reasons already stated. And mineral (rather than synthetic) is better for allowing your engine to run in properly.
