im getting a hissing sound from the behind the dash on my 1980 van. around where the brake servo is. happens when depressing the brake pedal. sometimes pedal goes hard and then creeps to the floor. any pointers on where to start much appreciated. alos if it does turn out to be the servo would this be any good for me:

The hissing noise sounds like it's the seal around the pushrod that's letting air into the vacuum chamber. I've had this a few times, (Vol-vos) and it's sometimes possible to fit a new seal for a few pence. Or possibly a leaky vacuum hose. Best find out before buying a servo.

If the pedal is going slowly all the way to the floor, that is not the servo. That is a problem with the master cylinder. If itjust goes down an extra inch or so while pressing the pedal, then that is the vacuum building up and pulling the brakes on.

I can't tell you if the servo in the link is OK or not, I'm afraid.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.
