1.6TD Engine bay Wiring - Random unconnected wires :(

Post by davegsm82 »

In the engine bay of my T25 1.6TD, the wiring loom which goes to the sensors around the number 4 cylinder end has a loose wire.

It's green with a white stripe, doesnt have a terminal on the end any more, just a bare wire. Has about 4.4v on it when the ignition is on.

I've checked around the area and can't find a terminal to go with it, I identified the various sensors and switches and can't account for this wire.

The primary oil pressure switch is there, and working.
What I presume to be the oil pressure sensor is there and has about 500 ohms resistance with the engine on.
Coolant temperature sensor is present, connected and if the gauge on the dashboard is anything to go by, is working.

I have noticed that red LED behind the temperature gauge flashes most of the time, sometimes its out but that's a rare occasion, yet the engine temperature is normal (rises from cold to mid-point on the dial in normal time).

Also, there's a Green wire coming from the wiring looms on the right hand side, has a ring terminal on the end and reaches pretty much to the alternator. Any ideas?

I can't seem to find a wiring diagram for my bus, and the Haynes manual doesn't appear to cover Diesel models, what am I supposed to do?

Dave.

Have a look at "Diesel wireing diagram" in "the Wiki"...then come back?

I've checked the Wiki, no mention of a Green wire with a White stripe.

Only thing I can think of is that the colour of the wire has changed over time and exposure to oil/diesel/the elements, perhaps it's the one described as "
T Blue/white to temp sender" under the Glowplug section. It's odd that it's in the same bundle as the temp/oil sensor wires.

On the following link, page 4, right hand side, just below half way down;

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/inf ... diesel.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's a WHT/GRN wire, but I've no idea what it's connected to, looks like a square box with wiggly insides. No indication of what it is, no name etc.

Any clues?

Yes, the glowplug light seems to stay on for a long time, it's not exactly cold at the minute either.

What year is your van? The Samba diagram is a mixture of petrol n Diesel,the box with wiggles is the heated rear window.Back to your van,it should have two temperature senders,one for the water temperature gauge,and one for the glow plug system...anyway check for a missing wire on either!
Good luck

It's an '88.

I'm going to guess that wire isn't for a heated rear screen since the van doesn't have one And the wire is in the loom with the temp sensors etc.

Will have a look tonight for wire-less sensors but I did look last night and couldn't see any at all.

Thanks, Dave.
