Just a whimsical thought.
Seems like the rattling I have experienced since October was a damaged crank bearing. It almost shook itself to bits last week and deposited some engine oil allover the floor from the clutch end so....
I am wondering. Given that the 1Y engine is listed as having the same BHP as an AAZ, is it possible to fit the turbo set up from my AAZ onto a 1Y? Or are the internals (eg pistons) so different as to make this unworkable?
I am very tempted to get a complete recon AAZ from Mario, since his reputation and experience rank pretty highly in T3 circles but am weighing up options, like doing a cheap temporary fix (as in the paragraph above) whilst I fathom out a TDI solution which doesn't swallow up most of my winters profit!!
Also which tdi engines will take the JX sump (or should I ask which ones deffo won't?
Thanks
Al

I had a 1Y that was stamped TD on the block. Other than that I have no idea.

if you have a search on here you will find people say as long as the block has TD on the side your good to go

Many thanks both. Worth knowing
Re: 1Y +Turbo=AAZ?
Same as what LLOYDY said.
Sure there are plenty of old threads kicking about with pics/tech stuff to qualify it. Think the TD stamped engines have oil squirters under piston skirts and sodium filled exhaust valves or summink like that

Re: 1Y +Turbo=AAZ?
I’ve been breaking a low mileage 1Y on an off for a few years. Lights had the pump and Obi had the camshaft, shells and followers.
The head is the same but you will need to replace the valves and guides to higher spec ones for difference in temp and pressure. Injectors are different. As they say above if it has TD on the block it should be good but I think you may need to upgrade the pistons.
Best thing to do is go on to Vagcat and check out the differences in part nos for each item.
I still have a decent block undisturbed and a good (no cracks) head here if you need them.

Re: 1Y +Turbo=AAZ?
Thanks for that.
I've sourced a (hopefully) decent AAZ!!
Sound like you'd need to do a bit to the 1Y for it to take the turbo.
Cheers
