fitting tyres

Post by commonone »

Just had my new tyres delivered today, rang a local garage and asked him to fit them. When I went back to collect them ,he tells me he can't fit them as he can't seal the bead. So I took them up the road to the kwik fit tyre place and the guy looks at them and say's it's because they have been stored on top of each other, the weight has pushed the beads so close together, and it's nearly impossible to fit them :?
I went home and had a look on you tube..................and apart from using some kind of flame or ratchet strap method, I couldn't find much else.
Surely tyre fitters come across this problem all the time ?
Don't they have the the know how and equipment to fit the tyres, I expected the guy at kwik fit to just say "no problem" come back in an hour and they will be done :ok
Tyres are bf goodrich 215/75r x15's if that makes any difference.
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.
Cheers Jon.

Hi
I work in a small garage in Bamber Bridge near Preston and we have a bead blaster, which blasts air into the edge of the wheel/tyre in one quick blast, which seats the tyre straight onto the rim, no problems.
Never failed.....we are not far away, give me a call on Monday and we can arrange for you to come down,
01772 336503 or pm me
I know it's a plug for the garage, Autosave Bb Ltd, we do everything, servicing , tyres, Mots , wheel alignment and can give club members discount.

Thanks Barry, that's the kind of answer I would have expected from from a large tyre company like kwik fit. Maybe the guy was too busy and couldn't be bothered.
Unfortunately I have to take two wheels in and have them done, and then return with the next two. So your just that bit too far away, but I appreciate the offer, and it's good to know as I do need some work done on my doka and I might give you a call later on.
Cheers Jon.

I put some tyres onto rims for the Landy (225/75 16 onto 7" rims, so probably very similar to your problem combo) the other week, using a mate's tyre machine - and the beads were MILES off seating. Neither of us could figure out what to do - a ratchet strap didn't help one bit.

So I stopped off at a tyre place on the way home - and they sorted it in seconds flat, without charging, and without a blaster! Simple trick. Kneel, grab either side of the tyre, and use foot power on the rim to persuade the front bead to seat. That's the easy bit. Then turn the tyre/rim round, and grab either side of the tyre, with knees on the rim. Pull hard, and wiggle, as somebody else inflates (valve core out). You can hear it suddenly "bite", as the leaks stop, then the pressure rises until POP!, it seats fully. Valve core in, and reinflate to pressure.

Cheers Adrian, I suppose for some one who knows about tyres ,wheels etc....it's not a big deal and maybe an easy fix. But I have never had a problem having tyres fitted before, just take em to the garage and let them do it.
After a bit of research, I now know that the bead can sometimes come off the rim, and for off roaders it is something they need to deal with from time to time.
One of my tyres did go flat after standing in the garage for some time and when I took it off and took it to the garage, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't inflate. I was cursing the air machine at the garage lol.
But..........Iv'e learnt something, and that's a good thing. Still a long way to go though.
Cheers Jon. :ok

Does make me wonder about some people whether they just can't be bothered with something not straight forward or just don't have the equipment or the knowledge if it is something a bit different.
It has been a problem for as long as there has been tubeless tyres. Adrian's method often works but the lower the profile of tyre
the less successful it is. There are inflatable belts and air blasters made just for this problem, we always had to use inflatable belts fitting cross ply tyres with their stiffer side walls to Beetles.

I think your right Herb, seems some people can't be bothered. Took the tyres to a third garage this morning and left them with him. Sure enough, within half hour I was on my way back to collect them as he couldn't do them. But in fairness he was a nice guy and told me to take them to a place called direct tyres. I rang and told them my woes, and he assured me they can do them ......no problem. So fingers crossed. Pick them up Monday.
Probably only really needed to change one tyre but decided to start fresh with 4 new ones, hopefully that's me sorted for a good few years. :ok
Cheers Jon.
