In desperate need of some electrical help.............

Post by lhd »

I can not find a replacement alternator that works on my van.
It has a JP engine from a golf so does not use the standard ancilleries.
All identification marks have worn away and no one seems to be able to help.
Is it possible to swap with a different alternator and what will this intail.
I have found a replacement that fits but have to rev the engine to about 2000rpm before the light goes out.

Sadly I am off the road until I can get this sorted and have no electrical knowledge.
I am going to dismantle the alternator tonight to see if there are any numbers inside.
Any ideas would be very handy.....
1.6d JP engine, alternator has an extended pully and plug fitting.
Many thanks Rob..................

I thought all alternators were the same. I have one that fits perfectly but the light stays on until about 2000rpm.
I can't work it out.
As for a pic Matt, it looks identical to the one GSF have given me.
why would one type of alternator work fine when another doesn't.

I had the same problem when replacing the regulator and had to get one from VW for £30. I tried two from GSF and one from JK's and exactly the same happened, ie light only went out at about 2000rpm.

I have been looking for somewhere to recondition it but I took it apart earlier to look for numbers and It is shagged, where the bearings have gone its tore up the inside.
I will have to try GSF for a golf one but they are not going to keep letting me try all of them as they are not supposed to take them back once they have been used.

Have you had the dash wiring checked? Sounds like you have got a bad earth or somewhere in the charging system. Before condeming the alternator check the output while the engines idling. If there`s 14v on the main charge terminal when the engines idling then the chances are the alternator`s fine and you`ve got a bad earth on the engine or the dash.

Even if it is the alternator they all work in much the same way so as long as you can find one that`ll fit at the breakers you should be ok....

Just fitted replacement and all seems fine. The one GSF originaly supplied me with must have been faulty.
I was really panicking there.

There is 14.4v at the live terminal on tickover and it does not change when rpm is increased.
I hope this is normal..............
