Is it possible to move a seat belt reel?

Post by tforturton »

Got a full width bed, and my westfalia kit-chen unit would fit along the side beautifully, if only I could shift the seat belt reel up out of the way. Anyone ever done this, or is it even possible?

You can mount both three point belt reels on the same side as the slider. One is in the normal position just behind the bench and the other goes on the rear pillar high up with two tongues / receivers to allow the belt to be reeled back out of the way of the bed.

After thinking about this problem overnight, I came up with the following solution.
The obvious answer was to cut a section out of the side of the unit. This would allow it to move that couple of inches closer to the drivers seat, and allow the bed to open fully. However, it wasn't quite as straightforward as that. I put the unit in place, and drew around the seat belt casing, but when I went to cut the chunk of ply out, I noticed that the metal piece that comprises the cooker and sink was going to get in the way. If I cut where I'd marked, then I'd also have to take a chunk out of the metal. So close, but yet so far.
Anyway, rather than cutting the metal, I thought maybe I could lift the unit slightly, by adding a plywood base to it. This would mean that the cut would pass below the metal of the cooker. By experimenting with various thickness of plywood, I found that 8mm ply was just about right.
So I cut a base for the unit, and fixed it to the bottom. Actually, this turned out to be quite a good idea, as the original base was coming apart anyway. Once this was done, the unit sits 8mm higher, so I could cut the section out, and just clear the metal of the cooker. So now the unit fits, and the bed folds out properly. Job done.
All I need to do now is figure out how to fix it in place, to stop it moving around. Any thoughts?
