Front wheel tyre choice

Post by peteandnero »

Is anyone out there bored enough to advise on my front wheel tyre choice as I think I've thought about this too much!

I've got a nice set of 16" 7.5J mercedes alloys fitted to my Westie pop top but I think I need new front tyres as the current ones are 91V rated.
So these are my options
205/60 r16 extra load versions give a 96V rating (-0.31% size from difference from original)
205/65 r16 which is generally available as a van tyre (+2.9%)
215/60 r16 again available as a van tyre or as extra load 98V. (+1.5%)
So the considerations are:
is the 96V load rating enough for legality and insurance?
If the higher van load rating is required is the 215 going to slow the steering too much?
Am I better with the 215 on the 7.5J rim as the 205 is on the lowest limit?

I've got 225/60 on the rear which are ok at present.

I'm not sure why you don't want to go with the same size as the rear.

I've been told the handling is compromised if you go wider than 205. I'd also have clearance issues.
