T3 fixer upper

Post by flying haggis »

Hello all, I've been skulking around on here for a while now and had a bus for a while so I think its about time i started a thread.
I purchased my bus just over a year ago from gumtree without viewing it before hand, I knew the engine was duff and the guy was desperate to sell as he was moving and couldn't shift it, so a cheeky offer was given and two days later a VW appeared on my drive. To my surprise it was in pretty good shape admittedly the paint wasn't great but other than that it was pretty good, so the plan was to throw in a AAZ and run it as it was.
Well the plan started off great but its ended up as a kind of rebuild including paint/engine/wheels/interior and lots of hours put in so faR
Its heading for paint in 3 weeks and I've got loads to do yet so wish me luck
Here it is the day it arrived, I had to whip the wheel of as it was punctured

As you can tell its a panel van convert (not a good one) it was fitted with some dogey after market conversion windows, they ratteled and leaked really badly and the interior honked of damp

The main thing tho was the engine, Id already got an AAZ of my mate for the pricey sum of £50 so just to satisfy my curiosity I thought id try and start the engine that was in the bus, mmm I think my dog could have farted and moved the compression gauge more, so out it came and with an order placed to Brickwerks I had it swaped over in a day or so.Image
Not sure what this is but Im pretty sure its not ment to be there

some new and refurbed bits

Unfortunately Ive no pics of the new engine going in but a new clutch was fitted at the same time as the old one was past it

I finally got my garage emptied so I could get the bus inside as its not fun working outside in winter time, before I did tho i ripped out the interior and windows with the help of my apprentice, I also sold the 3/4 westy bed it came with as I wanted a full width one

Some extra wiring I removed, Im surprised it didn't catch fire!! Speaker cable for lights and a 12v socket NICE!!!!!!!!

Once inside I started on the brakes which were a bit funky, new back plates, wheel cylinders, pads, shoes and flexies the brakes were sorted

Had a few days off of work so got a few jobs done, still loads to do tho plus I'm against the clock now as I've got a date in March for paint so il need to extract the finger.
Anyway I cut this

Then this
Image
To end up like this
Image
Only another 2 to go!
I filled in a hole where there'd been a 240v hookup socket fitted as I didn't like where it was, plus it wasn't hooked up to anything anyway
Image
Image
Image
I can't seem to find the pic of the finished welding, the back door rubber channel had a few bits that weren't great so they got the chop to
Image
Side door bottom channel was goosed aswell so whipped it off but rather than weld it back on I used shallow headed self tappers and tiger seal, it doesn't carry any weight plus I got a good lick of paint on it to
Image
Some kurust before about 7 coats of Galvecoat
Image
I'd been getting a funny smell but never thought much of it as I'd been welding and grinding but then I noticed the engine cover quietly smouldering away in the corner, oh dear!! Don't even want to imagine what would of happened if I haven't noticed it and gone in for the night.
