Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

Post by Jayjaysee »

Hi folks

Just recently my van started making a whirring\whining noise under acceleration. It's only doing it when it's in gear, not when it's coasting and not with the clutch depressed. It doesn't do it when the van's stationary either

The whirring note seems to be related to the speed of the engine; gets high as the engine speeds up. But it's difficult to tell as it is louder in 4th than 3rd and I can't hear it at all in 1st (maybe because of the engine noise and higher revs) I've read this topic here https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... g#p7859859 so it seems like it might be spigot shaft/bearing related although the wiki mentions a rattling noise from the bell housing which i don't have.

There's nothing that is actually going wrong although there's an oil leak coming from underneath which makes me worry about the loss of gearbox oil  I'll check the gearbox oil level and see if there's still some in there! The clutch bite point is really high as well but the clutch isn't slipping.

Here's hoping that it's not the gearbox in it's death throes

Any advice appreciated

Jason

Certainly check that gearbox oil asap. I bet some of our vans are still running around with what ever is left of the oil that was put in 30 years ago   Your noise could easily be related to a lack of gearbox oil. Read up in our wiki all about it as there are some good tips and some warnings about pitfalls for the unwary.

Thanks, I've got an allen key socket set on order for the weekend hopefully. I might even replace the gearbox oil anyway. As you say, I've no idea when it was last changed.

change the oil as that is the only way to gauge the wear from the build up on the drain plug magnet

But make ABSOLUTELY sure you can undo filler plug BEFORE draining.

thanks guys.

I've had a read of the wiki for gearbox oil replacement and it doesn't look too traumatic unless I can't get the plug out or find a bit of hose pipe (or it snows this weekend)

Is it OK to drive or is that a big no no? It's being used as a daily driver at the mo (probably a contributory factor)

Noise is generally something mechanical letting you know it is distressed, rotating bits of distressed metal can fail, sometime spectacularly
could be cv related, wheel bearing, or transmission
if daily driver I'm sure you have a breakdown and recovery policy in place

Right well I'm in the middle of my oil change. Problem is I can't get anymore oil in. Its a 2.0 Aircooled and it's taken just under 4 litres of oil.

It's on ramps at the front so I'm wondering if levelling out will help?

Lol. A gauge must be on the luxury models! This is the gearbox ghost.

The only way I know how much oil's in the gearbox is because I measured how much is left in the container

Not sure what you meant by a "gauge" as there is no level gauge on the engine oil, just a dipstick.

Re gearbox oil, it still should be on level ground and you just keep filling until it just starts to dribble out of the filler plug :)

Ok thanks. I think we're talking at odds. I was changing the gearbox oil not the engine oil and think you misunderstood me :-)

I thought that you'd be able to fill the gearbox with 4.5 l if it was on ramps at the front but it's dribbling out and I've put less than 4 litres in.

I'm letting it settle and then I'll try again tomorrow to fit the rest of the 4.5 litres in

Easiest solution I found to correct fill is to have long pipe pushed on to funnel and fill from engine bay. Needs two people or something to catch oil if you overfill but at least it will be right then.

I read on the wiki that draining and filling was easier with the front raised. Draining maybe, filling? nope

Thanks again
