1.7 d head (burned out valve)

Post by lucas »

I have had a fella here all day cos i thought the timing was bad on my crewcab, turns out that i have a burned out valve!

Really don't know what to do next

Are the 1.6 and 1.7 heads the same? am i likely to be able to get one?

Is it possible to machine the head? Shall i just scrap the engine and get something a bit quicker for it?

I'm in a really bad mood now!!

have just been reading through the site, its very good, so much info, there appear to be a lot of diesel engines about, if i do want to up grade will i need to change the box as i guess mine is a commercial box and tops out at about 60mph!!

1.6 and 1.7 heads not the same, just had a look and they are completely differnt part numbers etc.

I would look for a recon head, far easier and cheaper then a full engine transplant, which are never straight forward to do, especially if you are putting a different engine type in. If your existing engine has a good bottom end then that would be my idea anyway. If it`s all pretty knacked with bad oil pressure, smoking etc then there are a few options available to you. Have a look in the engine swap section. AAZ 1.9Td is the most popular, engines will all now be over 10 years old with lots of miles on though.

Your gearbox could be the limiting factor, as no matter what engine you put in it, it will still be geared for doing 3500 rpm at 65mph :( You are then getting into the realms of full engine and box transplant, plenty hours work, quite a few quid and having to source an engine and box that lots of people are also looking for. :?

If you are handy with the spanners then it`s just time and money to get it right, nothing is plain sailing when transplanting though. Read up on it all you can on here and the Brickyard, then read some more before splashing the cash :) Check out the thread "AAZ clutches" on alternative engines section for some info on what to expect :(
Keep it real.

Pull the head off, replace the valve, SET THE TAPPETS!
This is the thing with the T3 Diesels, no one ever services them properly, the valves get held open, then they burn out.
You will do the job for under £100 worth of parts if you buy a valve, head gasket, cambelt and tensioner.

Hey Lucas,

I sourced a nearly new 1.7D head for £100 - i was very happy with that as i had expected a lot more!

I put a post on the wanted section on this forum - and some nice dude (OneLoneStar or something like that - might be worth giving him a shout) got back to me in no time...

Does anyone know the relevant gaps for setting the tappets on a 1.7D ? I think i need to give mine a bit of a look before my next trip.

My Van was a 1.7d now has a TDI in it
the gearbox is fine will cruise at 60 uphill all day,
I find thats ok and having closer 3rd 4th ratios gives a good range of usefull gears
My van is rusty and smells like a chippy

It does not look too good, there is about a 5mm gap all around the cam follower!

So its now official i'm on the lookout for a decent replacement head, anyone?
