Starts but wont stop!

Post by daisybell »

1986 T25 1.9 watercooled engine. We've put in a reconditioned engine. It starts well, but when we switch off and remove the key, the engine is still running. Even when we disconnected the battery, it still ran on! Help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like you somehow have a battery live to the coil (black wire, bottom terminal) instead of an ignition live. Disconnecting the battery won't stop it then because of the output from the alternator. The engine should stop if you pull the wire off the solenoid on the carb.
What else was altered when the engine was swapped?

Hi and welcome to club 80-90 :)

Just a thought, in addition to Andy's above, when you say it ran on, do you mean it ran as normal or did it run on all lumpy? How did you stop it ? (these questions will help get to the answer).

If it ran on "as normal" then Andy is correct (as he usually is!) and you have a live feed to the ignition circuit that is not going via the key.

As a matter of curiosity only, where did you buy the recon engine from ?

We got the engine from Just Kampers as they could deliver it really quickly and we're short on time as hubby works offshore. And Scottish weather can get in the way, too! Bought Daisybell a few months ago, but she'd been lying for four years unused, and the old engine was shot. No water or anti-freeze ever by the looks of it. Decided to take our time and refurbish inside and out over winter and aim for our first trip in early spring. Fingers crossed. Appreciate your help and, like I said, we'll be back here frequently, I'm sure. Happy New Year all you VWers.

Told you we'd be back! When the engine was changed over, our 'assistant' (pop) pulled the wires off the carburettor and didn't label them. Any help on which order they reconnect please? Thank you.
