Headlights and Relays
hi
We have had our 1984 T25 for over a year now but recently we have started having a problem with our head lights.
the side lights are working and full beam works but dipped headlights don't work, so we are driving around with full beam on. We have checked the bulbs and they are fine, we have taken the switch off from the dash and cleaned the points and the battery is fine.
We were thinking it was a problem with the relay but we cant find it? Does anyone know if there is one and if yes where is it. I can see from justkampers that we are looking for a 5 pin relay but cant see one we thought it would be near the fuse box, but no!
Please can you help.
many thanks

Re: Headlights and Relays
There is no relay so switch failure is common
Have you checked fuses, one for each side.
also try another bulb hard to see if a filament is broken

thanks for your reply
we have checked the fuses and they all seem fine. Also bulbs are fine as we have tested them.
thanks

Re: Headlights and Relays
So most likely the switch, but could also be the flasher switch
does it have dim dip? Probably not on an 84? Switches are different.
you can try fault finding further but it depends on your electrical competance.

Re: Headlights and Relays
sorry to sound stupid but what do you mean by a dim dip...?
It has a 3 position switch on the dash with a small wheel under it. also it had a full beam/low beam switch on the steering column, is this what you mean?

On second thoughts, I think this is the flasher switch
Do you have a voltmeter?

Re: Headlights and Relays
When you say main beam works do you mean they just flash or do they stay permanently on?
if the full beam stays permanently on then this power is fed from the main light switch (just a flash works wiout the switch)
So the main switch must work, the flasher switch on the stalk diverts the power to dip or main beam so probably at fault, I say probably becuase wiring can also fail but this is most likely.
if you have a voltmeter you can test before buying parts

Re: Headlights and Relays
main beams stay on when we flick the switch. I can get hold of a voltmeter if I need to.
is this the part I need get?

what's it like to fit?

Re: Headlights and Relays
Also might be worth measuring the voltage at the headlight fuses - as that should be fairly easy to do without removing anything difficult (especially if you have old style fuses).itchyfeet wrote:When you say main beam works do you mean they just flash or do they stay permanently on?

So do you have the old (bullet) fuses or the newer (blade) fuses??

Re: Headlights and Relays
thanks for your help. I will look into getting a new switch and having a go at fitting it.

Re: Headlights and Relays
I think the general feeling is that it's probably not the 3-position light switch but probably the stalk that does the highbeam flashing - is this what you mean?clairstafford wrote:thanks for your help. I will look into getting a new switch and having a go at fitting it.
Basically if your highbeam works (i.e. you can pull the stalk and the highbeam stays on) then your 3-posh light switch is working fine ......
If you have a voltmeter/multimeter you might want to test what voltage is on fuses 3 and 4 (which are the fuses for the dipped headlight) when the 3-post switch is on - this will confirm if power is getting through the switches?

Re: Headlights and Relays
Just watch it with old style fuses. They can look intact only for one to have a minor break in it. Sometimes you have to remove each and check more carefully.
