oil breather pipe

apologies if this has been asked before but what exactly does the oil breather pipe do ? mines a bit past its sell by date and ive found this one on brickwerks http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/b ... bx-dg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; seems a lot of money for a bit of pipe , i'll get one anyway but im always keen to learn as much as I can and was just wondering how important it is , does it affect performance etc ? thanks jeff

Vents the crankcase, without it you'll have oil all over the engine.

Does it have to be that shape, i've read about people replacing it with silicone pipe or corriugated pond pump pipe at a fraction of the cost ? I'm going to replace mine soon as its gone a bit manky.

All I can assume is that they need to be correctly formed in order for the oil vapour to be able to be passed into the airbox and then burned off, if the pipe was to become kinked then in essence you would be blocking the path.

I guess if a correctly shaped pipe can be sourced then it would work the same, I needed one and bit the bullet and it's been on about 8 yrs now.

I've just bought one from GSF £22 with online discount mine to was perished
Someone (who shall remain name less) from facebook club 25 offered me a used one for £22 pound , when I said i would have to give it a miss as you can get a new one from gsf for £28 quid (without discount) he replied 'suit yourself but £12 pound is a resonable price' ! I replied ' you must have done a typo as you put £22 ' so if it is £12 I will have it .......never heard from him again tried to pull my pants down me thinks not all Vw owners are honest
Anyway was sick off trying to source a used one so got one from GSF happy days

I replaced mine with some stiff, reinforced, corrugated black plastic pipe I found in B&Q. That was ages ago and it is still fine. Others have done this too. You need a couple of bits off the ends of the old pipe to act as sleeves at each end. I still have most of the Metre length I bought if anyone wants some (free), but it is so cheap it's hardly worth the hassle of the post and packing !

I had a root around in one of the shipping containers at work today where we store all our crap and came across some of that ^^ pipe, we use it on pond pumps, going to give it a try.
