Accelerator pedal return

Post by NicBeeee »

Just changed the accelerator cable today, all went well, however I have got a spring to assist the pedal linkage to return, this spring is not looking good, as I am unable to find a replacement and is not in Haynes diagram I expect that this was put on a a bodge. Could someone tell me what is meant to be there, also I am missing the protective cover for the pedal linkage, Brickwerks have only got a lhd in stock so if anyone could point out where to get a replacement :ok

Register with vagcat then you can look at the parts catalogue and diagrams and find the part numbers, a quick google then tells you where to buy parts.
it looks to me like there is no cover for a rhd, mine doesn't have one, can't see the spring as you say probably an add on

Thanks for the link to vagcat, doesnt seem to be working in regards to the catologue but will try later, I presume the return for the pedal is just controlled by the throttle return on the carb then. When removing the old cable I noticed that it was routed incorrectly over the handbrake cable so maybe the spring was added due to the resistance caused by that.

I had a similar problem with mine, the accelerator would sometime stick in the open position, no fun at all! On investigation I found that a previous owner had added quite a strong spring at the carburettor end to aid return but the real problem was with the plastic tube the cable runs through at the forward end. Over years of use the constant "sawing" motion of the cable had cut through this plastic, at a bend, resulting in the cable becoming jammed within it. I will be replacing the complete assembly as and when my van is reassembled.
As for the cover for the lower accelerator mechanism, I understand that they were only ever fitted to LHD vans! I shall make my own up from sheet to give some protection.

did you register?, it won't give you access to the parts cat unless you are logged in.

I did register, followed by receiving email and logging in, but every time I viewed the cat it asked me to log in again. ended up in a constant loop. Will try later.

Removed the offending spring and took it for a drive up and down the driveway and the response is noticeable, looking forward to getting it back on the road once mot`d :ok

Looks like you need to tick the remember me box on the log in page, do not normally like to do this, anyway I have got in. As said no cover for the right hand drive pedal, guess it is hidden away within the steelwork so deemed unnecessary.
Thanks for handy link though, another saved site on my favorites list
