Urgent help needed for a very sick van in shropshire

Hi all,

My mechanical knowledge is zero. My '84 westy hightop has overheated badly, lost power and cut out. Smoke or steam everywhere with an awful smell . It turns out there was an split in a hose and no water was getting to the engine......and possibly oil (due to an oil leak). Now she will not start.

Can anyone tell me what damage could have been done, and more importantly does anyone know a good amechanic that knows about vans near the Market Drayton area that won't rip me off as funds are very limited

Oh blimey, this doesn't sound good. No water and no oil will usually mean some serious damage, but a lot depends on how long you ran it like that, and how poor it was to start with. It might be salvageable, but on the other hand, it might be totalled. Market Drayton is miles from me, so I can't recommend anyone, but I'm sure someone will be along soon to point you in the right direction. Good luck, and next time, keep an eye on the oil and water!

A cooked engine usually ends in it's replacement.
you may well have to travel for a good place to find out what's to be done.

Closest trusted bloke I know is GasureUK in Flintshire..just up the A41

Surely there must have been a warning light to tell you the water had gone?

Thanks for your replies so far. A local mechanic has kindly been to my house and looked at the old girl. His advice was that she sounds very sick indeed with no compression and some other mechanical jargon and instead of potentially spending over £1000 to strip it to find out that she's done for, find another engine and find camper specialist to replace it

Can anyone give me any tips on what type of engine to buy and where from. I currently have 2.1 petrol engine and I would like to replace it with the same ......anyway this is way beyond skill level...... I can just about change a tyre (

At 1984 I would doubt it.

A ring. I know the engine is not the origional engine,
And now in in no rush to get her repaired if that makes
It a bit cheaper
