1.7 ky rebuild, experience?

Post by Ads1987 »

Has anyone rebuilt a 1.7 ky Diesel engine?

Looking for some guides or at least some pointers if you have anything you think is useful to know.

Getting buzzer of doom and now it's cutting out when accelerating and then suddenly lurching forward, rather worrying so going to grab a mechanic friend and have a look!

I'm currently rebuilding the 1.6 SB TD lump for my mk2 golf... Essentially the same engine at the core of it!!

There are a fair few bits and bobs that'll need replacing if you're doing a full strip down...

Well depending on the mileage on the engine you might need to take it a little further...

I did all new bearings, inc intermediate shaft, first size over size pistons, new little end bearings as these were getting slack too

Obviously all new gaskets, and trying to find the time to get it all finished in and around my other work commitments 8)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your info, really useful to start getting an idea about it all. What caused you to replace this, was an oil pressure light coming or did you just decide it was time?

Thanks again,

Adam.

Unfortunately when I bought my car (ebay unseen - I know lol) the head was in a bad way... 4 broken hydro lifters and a mashed cam... Later I had to do the oil pump as the pressure relief valve was jammed shut...

The old motor has now done 210k... Still plenty of life in it, but it has an oily breather and the fuel consumption isn't what it should be...

So I picked up a replacement SB engine and pulled it down to give it a total freshen up!!

Besides I'm going down the big build route, so 1.9 head, modified pump, 2.5in exhaust, 20-25psi of boost..

Should be fun ;)

What do you mean about the oily breather?

The pipe out the top of the rocker cover leaking?

Sounds like you've got a good set up now though :)

Yeah the cam cover breather... It's a good indicator that you've got blow by on the pistons... So worn bores/rings

Mines oily but I assume that was the point as there's obviously oil on the cam so thought this just took the oil back down to the block? Unless I'm thinking of a different pipe.

Comes out the rocker and splits into two next to the air box

You'll get a certain amount of oil vapour out of the breather, but there is a point where it is too much!! :)

T25 installs also have the angle that the engine runs at against them too!!
