gear selection problems

Post by bilbothebrave »

Hi
I need some advise please

I have an 89 F Reg T25 Panel Van
Originally it was a 1900 dg Petrol Engine, following a lengthy process it has had an Engine Transplant and is now an AZZ 1900 TD Diesel
It has had a gearbox transfer too, having a four speed removed and five speed fitted

When I collected the van, I noticed that the selector was sloppy, I could get all gears going up the range. but engaging the two forward gears 2nd and 4th a little more difficult
But on going down the range
I had problems selecting the two forward gears, 2nd and 4th, they were virtually impossible to select
Therefore I used to decrease speed and block change from 5th to 3rd on roundabouts

The easiest way of explaining the problem
I was finding it more and more difficult to obtain gear selection
To the point I could only access 4th or 5th
Recovery attended
He added about a litre of transmission fluid
He asked me to try the gears
With the engine running and clutch depressed I couldnt select any gears
He asked my to select a gear with the engine off, I put into what I believed was first with the gear selector
Cranked the engine with the clutch up and the Engine fired, but not in gear
The van was recovered

Now
If I crank the engine the van wont start, it lurches
If I crank the engine with the clutch depressed the van with start
I can crank the engine with the clutch depressed and slowly release the clutch and the van will creep forward
Therefore I think the van is tuck in a high gear, possibly 4th

Originally I was advised it could be the clutch or "thrust bearing" had gone
Ive now been advised that it could be something more simpler like the gear linkage instead

I am not a mechanic
So please forgive me if the terminology I use is incorrect

Any advise I would be grateful
Many thanks

How long have you had the van? Who advised you about the problems you have got? Have you taken it to a trusted garage to give it the once over and a full service?

Ive had the van for over two years, but on buying the petrol block was blown, engine and gearbox transplants where done by a garage who specialise in T25s, with full MOT issued, I only got to drive the van for 12 days before the problem arose, I cant return the van to the original garage as its in west london and im in northampton, the van was checked by britannia recovery agent, who advised gear box problem, he couldnt specify anything more, the van has'nt been checked since breakdown due to being non drive

Have a look at the selector on the side of the gear box this part http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/g ... lever.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I had a similar problem, the washer that holds it on was missing. Cheap and easy diy fix

Just been underneath the van, had a play with where the linkage connects into the box, when I yank the linkage bar back and forward I can hear a clunk in the box
The area is cacked in grease and the rubber boot is split that covers it
The gear stick seems to be spooling around a lot with plenty of play , though I did believe that I slotted into 2nd and 3rd at one point, started the van - with clutch down - raised clutch, limps forward still as if in really high gear - poss 4th - I did lift the gater to see if I could see something obvious but nothing to note

Drop the gear linkage and just leave the part ive shown above on the gearbox, you should be able to move it back and forth taking it out of gear and back into gear push it in or pull it out. If the lever isn't on in the right position you'll have trouble changing gear with the gearstick
