Primer

Hi all

I've just welded a repair panel to the van, imediately above rear jacking point. I cut away all traces of rust first and once complete, cleaned up the weld and applied a couple of coats of acid etch primer until i repaint the van in the spring.

Unfortunately a week later the weld has started to rust through the primer. I thought primer would be enough for now, do i need to apply a topcoat straight away?

in a word yes,i would normally use zinc primer or cold galv spray if I was not gonna paint within a few weeks.

This is exactly why I chose an epoxy primer for my restoration. I knew it would take a long time to do all the repairs and it would all have gone rusty again by the time I'd finished. Epoxy primer is waterproof.

I was told by a panel beater mate of mine (after I'd done the same with a Triumph Spitfire's bulkhead section that I'd fixed and primed) that the run of the mill Halfords/ Motorworld (enter name of local bolt on chrome tat motor factors) primer you get in cans isn't waterproof in as much as the metal will rust underneath it. What he said to do if the repairs were going to take a while was to just give it a blast of top coat- doesn't matter about the colour as you can sort that out later as part of the finishing and paint over it. It's a good way to use up left over half cans of paint you might have knocking about!

I covered most of my repairs in red oxide primer. Repairs seem to be ok ish 3 years later.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've bought some Halfrauds anti-corrosive zinc primer, will chuck some of that on. Will put up a post of my bodywork progress at some point when I get chance.

Rebuild the b post and jacking point, replaced lower panel. Welded in a repair patch to the floor as well as welding in the panel above the rear jacking point. Taking time but getting there. Hoping to get it MOT'd next week.
