How much Hammerite?

Hi,

How much Hammerite would I need to paint 4 wheels? Would 250ml do it or would I need 750?

Do I need the galvanised version?

What's the difference between the smooth and hammered finish?

250ml should do them easy. Don't use hammered finish - looks terrible on wheels. Don't load your brush up too much or it'll run into the join or down the back of the holes. You want 'just enough' on your brush.

Personally I use rattle cans now as I can give them a quick blast whenever they look tatty.

None of the above. I recently spent a lot of time prepping some steels before painting them with smoothrite - not happy with finish at all. Recently brush painted various bits for tractors with Rustoleum where the finish wasn't that important, extremely surprised at the result. Would definitely paint wheels with this stuff. I'm sure some chap not too far away sings the praises of role ring vans with this very same product!

As Mr Rustoleum I couldn't agree more but he did ask how much - not whether it was suitable or not.

To be fair, wheels take a beating from the roads and no paint really lasts long term. White hammerite even less so. About a fortnight, if the weather is favourable. Best bet is to have 'em galvanised - not pretty but it keeps the rust at bay.

don't galavanise this is a rough process and most probably warp the wheels,id have em powder coated,im getting mine done in a few weeks much better finish even though they need doing every 4-5 years.

Thanks for the replies. I've done them now. I managed to get 750ml from screwfix for £10.99 so have plenty left. I think the finish looks pretty good. Better than rust anyway The wheels have plastic hubcaps covering them at the moment so it was more about slowing down the rust. But yes, the paint did run down through the holes.

I think Fairywinds would disagree Look great to me and also perfect for trailing arms.

I agree, I'm going to start buying suspension parts and brake back plates as and when they come up at the right price. Then I can get them galvanised ready for installing.

Should last forever then.

A no-brainer on trailing arms for sure - given their increasing shortage as T25s rust away. I kept my old ones which have rusted out on the top (as they all do) for exactly that purpose. They just want the rust cut out, strengthening plates welded on, then galvanised. Do it right and you end up with trailing arms that are far stronger and will outlast the originals, many times over. Even if you just kept them in storage its a win-win situation in the future. Proably be worth £500 a piece in ten years
