is it essentail to use gaskets or is it ok to just the exhaust sealant?

Gaskets, as sealant can soon be blown out, even with exhaust bandage. Its often cheaper to buy a small sheet of exhaust gasket material and make your own rather than always having to buy kits or sets.

I bought a full set from ebay, including new studs and nuts. Paid £12 but can't remember seller. Decent quality too.

Only place I have used sealant (fireclay) is on the later exhaust system metal O gasket before the box.

Try copaslip instead of exhaust paste. Seriously. It works brilliantly, and if ever you need to separate the exhaust you won't have a bugger of a job to clean it all up again.

If the gap's too big, though, you'll never get it to seal and stay sealed no matter what you use. Fitting pastes are always just for sorting tiny pinholes out, not big gaps - if there's a gasket or physical seal, use it.

trouble is, i've been through all the different places selling "exhaust fitting kits", but they can't swear that they include everything i will need. i don't want to buy a kit, start work on the exhaust then find out i'm missing a gasket etc.
