differences between Caravelle and Multivan ?

Post by pionte »

Just in the process of preparing my Hitop camper for sale  but looking to replace with a tin top Multivan or carevelle... trouble is I dont really know what the differences are

So which one has the rock n roll style rear seats ( 3 across the back ) and 7 in total ? and one has 6 seats with 2 at the back ? Is the Carrat the top spec ? and did they come in both LHD and RHD as a Carrat ?

Any advice as always gratefully received .

In brief (on european market, without the USA and South African ones):

All original multivan has a rear rnr seat rear facing buddy seat and a fold up table. Usually they are 6 seaters (2+1+3). +1 extra rear facing seat behind the passenger seat was an option (2+2+3). In the early ones the buddy seats had a storage box, in the later ones fold up seat was an option on Magnum (just the extra or both) and default in Bluestar/Whitestar and Limited Last Edition (both fold up) As I know all Multivans are only LHD
The Caravelles are 7 to 9 seater in 3 row (2+2+3; 2+3+3; 3+3+3) but only the later Caravelle GL has rnr rear seat. Both LHD and RHD
Caravelle Carat is a 6 seater (2+2+2) with fold up table and invidual seats. The middle 2 are turnable backward, rear oneas are electric Passat seats, no rnr bed. LHD only

Check http://vwpix.org/ for almost all the brochures.

A big thanks to you guys, kev for the link and ZsZ for all the information, as with the rest of the range there are lots of different variables!
I am looking at 2 later today, both report to be ' rare' examples... 1 being a wolfburg Lhd multi Van and one being a rhd Caravelle carat.. Apparently 1 of 30 made in rhd? Stories like this usually start alarm bells ringing with me, I do know that there where 30 rhd westfalia campers made in the UK before due to the poor quality westfalia pulled the plug, it just seems to be a coincidence that the exact same number or rhd carats where made?
The multi Van would be my preferred layout, but as always condition and price would dictate.

I ended up with the Caravelle CL but was looking for a Multivan
The Caravelle just ended up being to good to pass up just for the interior especially after the previous owner had really looked after it
We are a family of four and the kids love having a bench seat to themselves
Good luck with search and thanks to Kev for the links :ok

I agree with you , for a given set budget sometimes compromises have to be made and a good clean example from a good home is a great starting point, no point having a top spec van if its unreliable or rotten ! Glad you like it, both of the ones I saw today had issues.... ones that I can fix but not at the sellers asking price :rofl
