Big Brakes please

Post by Delbertini »

Need to upgrade my brakes on the T25 Doka as now have EJ25 Subaru engine fitted
Been looking around and want a complete kit rather than piece one together, problem is can't find a decent one here in the uk, did see one from Futbus but don't think its or he's still around, also Ultimate engineering do a Porsche one but mega dosh.
I have found a couple from the states, Van café do a bolt on Audi based one and Gowesty also have a nice looking kit, both these come in kit fprm and look nice.
Has anyone used either of the USA kits or knows of any others worth looking at. Was also gonna do the back with Ultimate kit, any thoughts????

Thanks people

I had 312mm fronts on my gti Doka.

Absolutely no noticeable difference over well fettled standard ones TBH. Only difference will be would be over prolonged heavy breaking ie resistance to fade.

CHARLIE Transporcher said once that best mod he ever did was to go BMW servo on standard brakes. Never Did it myself though :ok

Maier does one based on VAG parts but at 1100€ it's not cheap.

With kits you pay for the pleasure ,

I recently upgraded to 996 calipers and Mercedes 312 discs - total bill was around £600 including calliper adaptor and flexi lines and the always forgotten fluid. took about a day to fit and hour or so to turn down my hubs to accept the discs .

Thanks guys
The ones on the brickyard site look good, will need to check weather its a complete kit or some of the parts needed. Had a look at two sets from the USA, Burley motor sports and Gowesty both do good sets and cost around £550 which is ok but then theres shipping, Burley will ship to UK for around £150, there 288mm disc with everything including Hubs etc

check out "EPYTEC.DE" really good stuff. I have the passat 312mm kit on my bus and their rear t4 vr6 kit on the rear. nicely made stuff with correct hardness bolts etc and not too expensive either if you can get your old hubs/discs machined down to make the hubs(its easier than it sounds).but you can get a complete kit with hubs for 239 euros anyway! so you just need the discs and the ate57 calipers(very cheap on ebay) sorted.

Those epytec kits look good.
Though google translate is quite poor.

Does anyone know if any of the rear drum to disc kits will fit with 14" wheels?

If you're still on 14", it's very unlikely the big brake kits will fit under the fronts - but, even if they do - you'll probably find at least as much braking upgrade by changing the rims and tyres. Standard brakes will lock standard tyres quite happily - and, beyond that, it's really only fade resistance that you'd gain. And, on standard tyres, it's unlikely you're going to be doing a lot of hard thraping around mountains or tracks anyway. Lateral grip would be much more of a factor in keeping your speeds down.

Rear brakes do very little in hard braking - much of the weight's transferred forwards - and you really, really don't want the back end to lock up. That's when life gets interesting.

Yes you'll need 16" wheels or bigger to fit 312mm discs on the front. But I agree with Adrian. Stock brakes should be fine really, if not then there's probably something wrong with them. I changed mine as I like fiddling about with stuff(and normally make it worse in the process). my Van is like grown up mechano for me. I'e changing the rear drums has made zero difference to the brakes that I've noticed but then i dont drive very fast anyway. perhaps if I drive over a big mountain pass in the alps and have to do an emergency stop whilst half way down I might notice the difference. changing the servo did make the pedal feel a lot lighter though.

Just to clarify, if I was upgrading the power substantially, I'd definitely be upgrading a lot of other running gear to cope. Leaving the rims & rubber standard would be just as big a limiting factor as leaving the suspension or brakes alone.

I only asked because my drums are past their best. Yes I could refresh them all but spending that money seems a waste compared to having discs.
Except I like my stock wheels with chrome rover hub caps and tyres with about 7mm of tread on the michelins.

Keep the stock fronts and fit rear discs. Good point with rear discs is that they are maintenance free, T3 rear drums are a pain as they don't really adjust. Plus, when you add up the costs of backplates, drums ect, discs seem good value. Speak to silverbullet, he's doing a rear disc kit and will say if they fit under 14" rims. i imagine they would.
i went to 303mm vented fronts only for overheating reasons, overall stopping distance is slightly better. I can now lock up the fronts if i try, and thats with a 205/80/16 tyre. But it is not night and day difference, i have the bmw servo sitting on the shelf to fit. Looking forward to that..
I would like rear discs, but the 16" syncro has different bearing housing so the kits don't fit. It does have the bigger drums off the LT though.... :D
