Will a 86 diesel engine fit in a 82 diesel van?Now with pics
Hi all,
I have bought an engine that I am told was out of a 1986 van. My van is a 1982 diesel transporter. The engine has the bars and mounts still on but for some reason a car sump! Will the engine fit in ok?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank, Jon.

I will grab a few pickies Thursday. I bought the engine some time ago and now I'm hopefully getting close to fitting I had a horrible thought that it may not go straight in. Suppose a better question would be have the engine bars ever changed over the years?
Will still throw some pickies up!

The engine bars didn't change over the years, no.
If (as someone above mentioned) the replacement engine has been used as an 'upright' - as opposed to the standard 50deg - installation, then you must either install it in the same way in your van, or swap the sump and oil pickup from your current engine to the new one.
If you install at 50deg but leave the 'car' sump on, you will wreck the engine very quickly.
It should be possible to work out what you need to do, by looking at both engines.

sorry, they did.. early engine bars are diff to late ones.. early ones have a pivot point on them, and the whole engine is forward to where late bars put it (early gearboxes are longer)
by "early" I don't mean the usual "early" (1986 ish) but the first 24 months of production

For the record I have 5 bars, 4 mounts (one with a hole in it) and 2 sumps!

Just checked my messages and I have cleverly saved my messages from Billy. He said it had a car sump and was happily running in the van!
