OK, so there are two wide concertina type air pipes, which protrude from the offside body underneath the air filter on my '86 1.9DG. They just point out and down about 18 to 24 inches towards the exhaust and stop.
Now here's the thing. I have no idea what they are, or if they are meant to be attatched to something. I can't find a piccy of that part of the engine anywhere that might show me what they are meant to look like/do.
I know, I know; I'm embaressingly stupid, but there you go.

Hot air pick up pipes which attach to the canister round the old type of 'J' tube exhaust .. feeds hot air to airbox arr' makes for more efficient + less chuggy clod running Aparently !
Yours got the later type zors ?? with the two front cylinders joined by a pipe ??

Running late + no photos now .. .But ..
When the engine is cold, the air intake which feeds the air filter + then the carb .. draws warm air from a kinda pipe round the pipe [not the exhaust fumes but the heat from the outside of the exhaust pipes] and feeds the engine with warm air as opposed to cold air from atmosphere...
will sort snaps out and a better explaination when time... but im sure there will be more answers + photos landing anytime now ...

Murph .. Have you removed your air filter box to take these snaps ? or is this how it is !!! is my first question ...
then stick your head under the van and see how the exhausts run ..

B. NEWER TYPE The two front cylinders [one right one left] joined together by a pipe running under the gearbox across the van, then a pipe running back on the left hand side towards the silencer ?

If you enlarge the JK snaps you will see both systems have 4 points of inlet into the pipe, one for each cylinder AND a couple of large inlets into a .. How can i put it .. Large Can around the Exhaust system tube on the right hand side .. this is where warm air is drawn of the surface of the hot exhaust [hot surface, not the inner fumes + parp ..] this warm air is used by the airbox [dependant upon the temperature ! via Flap valves ] then sucked into the carb , mixed with go go juice + Bang we is a runner..
Warm air to engine on cold day = better efficiency + smoother running !
As far as i know a lot of the vans on here dont have the warm air can + tubes to the air sys, as some of the exhaust systems dont have the Can' and its probably not a big issue .. but when its cold and the flaps call for hot air or a mix, your air to the filter is sucking up from the road as opposed to sucking clean air from the airbox - vent in the back of the van..
could suck crap up ? i know the filters in line, but i would not be happy sucking air from so low !

OK, I've just crawled under the van, on the soaking wet tarmac, and smacked my head on the towbar on the way back up, and I have the "B" newer type of exhaust and no "Large can round the exhaust" thing.
So, (if I understand this correctly) if I had that large can thing, that's where the big air pipes would normally fit and would provide heated air to the carb to help it when cold.
Useful, but not essential?
