Having discounted the diesel option due to the high cost and still contemplating the reality of Subaru parts prices how does the GTi lump stack up?
Has anybody ever fitted one to a syncro? I gather that the GTi engine has to be tilted to make it fit in a normal T25 but the syncro engine sits lower so would this still be an issue?
Also are there any professionals out there that do this conversion?

hi,i fitted a gti donk to a regular 2wd doka, it was a regular flying machine, yes it stuck up a bit but what a flyer!! the cost and trouble and grief the elecs gave me were worth it in the end, theres not much elecs on an early gti motor, mine was a 1.8, the injector unit etc had to be put on the opposite side to normal, i had longer audi injector lines, the exhaust was a mess, lots of flexy pipe to the boxes!
but it would leave novas and other boy racer crap for dead!!!
i used a diesel bell house on my regular 5 speed box, away it went!! but it was a 2wd doka!

such is life
he who dies with the most toys wins.
when im at those pearly gates i want to tick ALL the boxes!
you laugh at me because i'm different, i laugh at you because you're all the same!

the more I read about non standard engines the more of a nightmare they seem to be !
Im in total agreement with you there Matt.
Unless you are fairly mechanically minded and know how to fix it when it goes wrong then I think generally they are a bad idea.
If you are fairly handy, and know how to fix it when it goes wrong then fair do's, go ahead and fit something different.
If, on the other hand you rely on a garage to do your maintainance then, well, most local garages won't touch or understand anything that isn't stock, it's a bit of a nightmare for them not knowing what this and that are and most will shy away alternative engines.
There are a few exceptions, the AAZ conversion is a fairly easy bolt together conversion using mostly factory parts, things like exhausts and service iems can be bought over the counter with ease. When I do AAZ's the only 2 parts that aren't VW items are the turbo oil feed and return pipes, all the rest is AAZ or JX.
GTI conversions puzzle me as the Diesel 215mm clutch ain't that strong but there are loads of them kicking around, and people seem to make a right pigs ear of fitting them, I've had a few turn up at the garage and I have refused to work on them, they were that bad.
