Rebuild

Post by xpertbert »

Hi I hope someone can help me. I have a 1.9 petrol engine. Pierburg 2e carb. The owner before had disconnected the auto choke, also were the breather pipe goes into from the plastic housing above the carb it has been routed downwards and ends up in a small breather bottle. The top flap in the carb has been removed to, hence why I think it ticks over at about 1.3rpm on the after market rev counter

Question 1. I have another carb and auto choke. I want to buy the rebuild kit. But the screws that bolt the auto choke to the carb are missing and I think there is a part missing to connect the auto choke arm to the carb side. Were can I get these from, I'm can't afford to splash out on new carbs etc

Question 2. Can you fit a manual choke or something. Or will it work without a choke and how do I leave it disconnected.

Question 3. Is it possible to set a carb up by yourself. I'm pretty much a novice but confident in taking a carb to bits and rebuilding. Just need to expert advice from you guys. If I need to pay someone to set this up how much approx should I expect to pay.

I do hope someone can help........

Top flap in the carb is the choke flap, it should not make it tick over too high if its missing, chances are its just the throttle stop screw that needs adjusting, its the screw originally with shroud on the rear.

re routed breather pipe could be a problem as it may be drawing in air, really need to connect it to the breather tower

Choke housing screws are standard easy to source those, i will find the size,

choke link part missing? would need photos to see whats missing.

Yes id say worth a go, lots of pics here...

If you mean this its the link for choke flap located deep in the carb, it may have broken as is common and so somebody just removed the flap

There is also one more problem I have been having. On the motorway when accelerating of 65 mph the will judder slightly it's like it get starved from fuel. Drop back down and it's fine. It is only a small judder. I have purchased myself a fuel pump ready to fit aswell. I do want to try and get to the bottom of all this. So any help would be very much appreciated :ok

Wow, where to start, I'm going to post a series of comments rather than one long post so I can look back at the photos.

Breather pipe should connect to the pancake air trunking as I'm sure you can see, it may have been disconnected to pass an mot for emissions as that is an oil vapour breather, the oil vapour should get drawn in and burnt which can increase emissions.

Just a bit more info for you. She always starts fine and does drive very well. Struggles a wee bit up hill. And only twice in a year it has stalled then couldn't start her up. It was like there was no fuel getting in. Only way I got he started was to spray some quick start down the carb until after about a minute off she would go again.

Have a look on your spare carb to see if you have the link, to get to ot you must remove the choke flap, screws are peened so wont come out easy, dont round then out use a good screwdriver of the right point size.
you then need to remove a pressed in cap at the end of the choke flap spindle and it will then push out, I have a pic somewhere
