Number plates

Post by Mk2Tony »

Hey guys

Me and the wife recently purchased a T25 Devon conversion, which had number plates with slanty writing and silver shadowing around the letters on it. After a week of having it I got pulled over by a (clearly bored) copper, he didn't fine me as I had not long had the van but he did say if he seen me again he would fine me 100 quid (a bit extortionate for a number plate I think, as I'm sure they would read it clear enough if I was speeding!) I have now replaced them for the time being with standard plates but they don't look great

I would really like to put silver and black plates on as they are a bit more retro but not sure if I could get away with this, does anyone else have them and had any issue's? my van is a 1981 on a W :ok

There is a cut off year after which you must conform the current standard colours - i.e. black letters on yellow at the back and black letters on white at the front. Can't remember off the top of my head but it is early 70s.

The answer may be in here https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 230913.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but I've not read it to check!

ETA: anything reg after 1 Jan 73 must conform to the current colour scheme. Can technically be an MOT fail if not and the police can issue a VDRS which means 14 days to change them of face a fine. As to how likely you are to have an issue....well, they've pulled you once and within a few weeks of ownership....

Well I dont like to say that I told you so but after seeing your van and comments on Readers Rides I sent you a PM (19/8/14) to warn you about number plates particularly as you said you were travelling to parts of Wales where other members have experienced zealous policing of number plates. Silver on black can only be used on vehicles registered before 1st Jan 1973 - its in the leaflet LeeM3 points you to.

Yeh I got your pm but for some reason couldn't message you back, I had been pulled before I put the pic on here and made some standard plates up in work, I didn't like the ones that were on there anyway but I was off work for a week so didn't have the cance to change before getting pulled! Just prefer the look of the black and silver but can't be arsed with the potential trouble with the cops, haven't been pulled for about 10 years before that!
And I got pulled in Cardiff didn't end up going down west as we went to llangorse lake instead!

It's all a bit of an a*** really! As you said, you know damn well you'd get a fine off any camera and I'll bet an ANPR camera could still read it though I believe they do struggle with the old silver on black format. Easy targets for the police to show how well they clean up!

And this is all part of the switch to paperless car tax and modern ANPR recognition aimed at catching the cheats. I can never figure out why some drivers feel they are entitled to irregular fonts though. They just look complete knobs to me. Reg numbers are nothing more than imposed database numbers and modifying them just attracts unwanted attention. :D

yeh like I say I didn't like the ones with the stupid font, like you said it just attracts unwanted attention. I have seen a few post '73 vehicles with the black and silver plates and they just look much better than the tacky yellow and white ones! I might just change from plastic to metal pressed instead they might look a bit more fitting for the van

They can be 3D but they still have to be reflective which limits things greatly. If I had any advice to offer, it would be forget any flights of fancy on this. Its just not worth it. I don't think you'll find anything that pleases both them and you. Leave it for when you're at a show.
