Snapped exhaust valve

Post by tamson »

Big disappointment, I posted earlier about a missing exhaust stud, thanks for the advice but problem is worse than I thought. I was carrying out the work this evening and I decided to check valve clearances while I was down there. Number 4 exhaust seemed extremely slack and when I investigated further I discovered the tip of the stem snapped off along the groove. I replaced the valves 5000 miles ago, regularly check valve gaps and use good oil. The only thing that I have noticed is recently there has been quite a bit of oil leaking from the rocker cover and the cork gasket is knackered. Could the valve have snapped due to lack of oil? It seems odd that it has snapped after so little mileage. Thanks

Cheap aftermarket replacements? which puts a question mark over the others

Yes that's all I can think it could be. I'm just thankful that the piece didn't make it down one of the pushrods tubes. I'm not sure what make they are other than they came from VW heritage.
