1y engine is in the van I have bought but....

Post by Chiefy »

It was originally a 1.9 petrol, changed to a 1.6D by the PPO....
Guy I bought it from sourced a 34k 1Y and swapped out the 1.6D. Used the dipstick and sump etc....
Now , I have just drove it home and two things..
1. The temp gauge barely moves from the bottom (I'm talking only about a needle width from dead cold)
2. It revs it's nads off at 55-60 so I'm guessing that's the old 4peed box?

What are my options for a box? It's an '84 panel van :mrgreen:
Drives great though, no smoke or noises. But I am stressed about the gauge till I bond with the van :rollin

my temp gauge did same new thermostat sorted it plus your heating should get nice and toasty
you'd be right in thinking gearbox
a 20l Aircooled t25 box would do you or have yours built to suit

I'm fairly sure my pal has a 5 speed box from a T25 he broke a couple of years ago.... Is there much of an issue with compatibility with the 5 speed replacing a 4 speed?
Would the box codes help?
Cheers in advance

A box from a petrol t25, 4 or 5 speed will have slightly higher gearing, but the final gear in a 5 speed is not higher than the final gear in an equivalent 4 speed. The extra gear on a 5 speed is a low crawler gear.

First stop, try bigger rear tyres, 205/80/14 or 215/80/14 assuming standard wheels :)

Cheers for the advice :ok

I have found out my pals box is 4 speed, so is having a taller 4th gear an easy option?

Just a cheeky bump up for this one, I have seen that the van has 215 by 15" tyres on, I can't remember the profile as I'm on duty at the mo so away from the van.....
I have left messages with two gearbox "specialists" here in the northeast.... Neither has bothered to reply :roll:
Any ideas good people?

probably worth a chat with Aidan Talbot http://www.aidantalbot.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When I had a 1Y fitted on a 1.6d box I emailed him about a rebuild/re-gear and he said to be careful not to overgear a 1Y - although mine is a full camper conversion carrying half a tonne of chipboard and fibreglass and usually 3 people and loads of other stuff.

When you get a chance, check the profile of your 15's and compare the diameter to 185/80/14 using this calculator:-

http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My plan was going to be petrol gearbox + bigger tyres, but then I had another engine swap so never tried it on the 1Y
