Loose wing mirror

Post by DevonMark »

Had one or our wing mirrors replaced, but it's too loose and gradually moves position while driving. How can it be tightened?

Thanks
Mark

Remove mirror and tighten the nut under the mounting bracket

^^^ half the answer!
grease your balls then dip them in dry sand. Be warned that you will not be able to move them easily afterwards. I did mine around 9 years ago and they haven't moved a mm. (Good job I'm not married eh? ) Best to get it into position before re-affixing as they can be difficult to move afterwards. Don't bother with just tightening the nut as it can lead to shearing it off as you struggle to get it tight enough. I have been telling people to do this for quite a while and no-one has said that it hasn't worked for them yet.

Works on a beach if you're a bit liberal with the suntan lotion - allegedly of course.

I took a similar approach and took a file to my balls scouring and roughing them up, then did the same with mating part.
they are pretty good up to 70+MPH so only really move when im doing 65 and theres strong gusts of wind, they are creaky and stiff but will fold away

Ifound its best not to lube your balls but apply just the right amount of tension via small nut. It sometimes pays to have an assistant when doing this and a delicate touch helps. However, too much and cracking can result. You can also ask to have a look at a mates balls to get some idea of whether yours are too loose or not. I tried that and just got stern looks.

I haven't seen Itchyfeet's to know how rough his are (and in this instance I don't think we want any photos), but I agree, friction is key as much as tension.

Joking aside (for the moment ;)) I reckon those after market ones are not "fit for purpose". Luckily I kept my old mirrors and was able to swap over the springs as the new ones are just so much weaker!

I mean, how hard would it be for them to change the spec to a stronger spring

I havent roughed up my balls, but having to park in a narrow alley means they get worked daily. They used to struggle and play up if I tried going to quick, now they can withstand a good thrashing. They've even had the odd slap from others when I haven't fiddled with them.

I had one badly gouged by a passing truck once. I gritted my teeth. I'm only glad I had one the other side. :D
