radiator fan

Got bit of problem.... Evangeline (1985 1.6 TD) had hot flush the other night whilst standing on the drive, cooling fan cut in (at top speed and very noisy) for no reason hadn't been driven for 24 hrs so nice and cool. Disconnected battery, fan stopped, re connected no fan so intermittent problem maybe? Have left battery disconnected for moment. Has anyone else had this happen??? Any suggestions please?

It could be either a faulty switch on the radiator or maybe the relay which switches the fan to high speed. You can remove the fuse for the fan (fuse 1, leftmost) to stop it, but obviously the fan won't work at all then...

There was a post on this last year or maybe the year before I think - their fan came on in the middle of the night on a campsite. I can't remember the solution though.

I found that thread, there was no solution posted to the original question as to cause, but a couple of replies said they had the same problem caused by the thermoswitch on the radiator.

I'm one of those having had the switch in the radiator fail like that but for me in middle of day. Was in this thread https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=121031

Van just sitting there with cold engine and my neighbour mentioned she thought the engine had started up by itself while she cleaning her car in front. It was the fan coming on on full speed. Only way to stop it was to remove the fuse until I got a new switch. New switch cured it proving fault was in the switch.

I had a similar issue with mine a while back....a new thermoswitch fixed it. Don't go cheap, fit a quality replacement.

Remove lower grille.
Quick fix...the old one can be removed and the new one fitted with minimal coolant loss (about an egg cup full) out/in in 5 seconds.
Bleed from the top screw...job done.

to oldiebutgoodie and all, thanks for posts will get new switch for the fan and see how that goes, prob get new relay as well just to be on the safe side, don't want to be woken up in middle of night like feardana from Ireland did, luckily Evangelene played up on the drive bless her ,will post results on sleep or not thanks
