2L Aircooled end float

Hi all

The end float on my 2l Aircooled motor is 0.25mm, is this the sign of serious issues or is it just a case of new shims?
My current shims are in good order and total 0.99mm.

My existing shims are 0.31, 0.34 and 0.34mm.

Maximum end float should be .15mm, so if calculations are correct 3 shims from brickwerks would bring it down to .10mm which is in spec. However if you take the flywheel and move crank forward and back to see if there is any play in the main bearing. There shouldn't be any play but if there is it would indicate case wear as that bearing/area of the case takes a hammering from the clutch etc. it may just we wear in the outer bearing face or shims though.

How do I check bearing play? Your description sounds the same as I did for endfloat. I did try moving the flywheel up and down, there was no movement in this direction.

Pretty much the same as checking end float. Just need to check no fore and aft movement. When you press the clutch pressure is put on the bearing against the case.

I'm confused. When I move the flywheel fore and aft, how do I know what is bearing play and what is endfloat?

With the flywheel off your not checking end float, your just trying to check for play in the bearing. The play wil be in the same direction as end float but it's just play in the bearing you need to check. To set end float you put 2 shims in then the flywheel on and torque to spec. Then measure end float and deduct .1mm off what you have. This will give you thickness of final shim required. But this is where having a few different sizes come in handy to mix and match to get a final shim thickness.
