Morning all. My van's been at a specialists for 8 nearly weeks. It's was reconned but soon had a failed head gasket which was repaired but it over heated regularly since, finally it was terminal and the mechanic said the big end had gone. Every time I call up, its "yours is next on the ramp or it'll be finished early next week or he's not here call back". It was due to be finished again today.
When I called today in to check I was asked which engine it had in it. When I said it was a 1.9 DG the mechanic said "oh no they've built you a 2.1" When I said can't you fit that instead" he said no it won't work, it sounds terrible on idle, and you'll need injection fitted and a new petrol tank. What are your thoughts?

No
You do not need an injection system.
and how do they know it's a 2.1?
Did they check the stroke and the valve timing... as thats the only way
unless it says DJ on the case
the DJ is just a long stroke DG, externally no different

It's Elite VW , they do loads of these so should know. I had my doubts about their excuse but as I didn't know for certain I want to check my facts before I go back.
So I don't need injection or a new tank? A 2.1 could fit straight in?

Yep! just swap all the 1.9 ancillaries over and it'll go right in. been done lots of times. I've done it too.a common upgrade.

Just spoke to Big Mick at Elite. He says that the cold start gets messed up, especially on an automatic and it will drink petrol. Gonna take his word on it. Thanks for the advice though

Yes I did say that I mainly ran on lpg, somehow got lost in the conversation. I'm a little suspicious that the 2.1 engine didn't really exist but I could be being too cynical.
