convert to electronic ignition

Post by garygold »

Hi everyone I have a T25 camper 1600 Aircooled,1981.
I wanted to convert it to electronic igition .
I think it used to have this but was ripped out for some reason.
all my vacuum leads have been sealed off.
I am having more trouble starting now its getting colder.
would this be the right move -
is there a kit and guidance

any comments welcome.

Hi Gary,

Scoobs had the 009 bosch thing on when I got her with non-standard carbs. Running problems so changed to standard set-up. Running much improved, obtained through Spannerack. Don't think you can get the distributors new anymore (but will stand corrected)

Haynes has good information on how to remove and replace distributor, but Headley18 did mine.

hi ermie
Scoobs looks great,
I was thinking of fitting the Boosh 009
or some kind of kit.
my mechanic was going to get some salvaged parts to keep the costs down.
did you redo the timing yourself .
I think I can get the bit from USA
how much could I spend to convert to electro
regards GG

Pertronix!!!!

They supply all the electronic ignitions sytems for the VW Aircooled range
If you specify your bosch dizzy part number they can match the correct one, vacum advance or not!

You can get a whole new dizzy, leads, cap, rotor, plugs and ignition module for about £150 if you shop around.

Just to add,

I fitted one to my beetle years ago it was the best £60 quid I ever spent on a bug! Results are instantanious! I added a set of bosch grey leads soon after!
Stay away from non oem performance leads unless you have a performance engine.

You know they'll fit and work better!

If you can stick with the vacum advance as the carb needs it if its got it!
I suffered with small "flat spots" in the engine rev range during colder weather.

Buy it buy it buy it! I cant recomend enough!

1600 Aircooled CT engine code..
You could use a 009 on that engine, but less than ideal.. and would need to time at 28-30 deg BTDC above 3000 rpm IIRC.. DO NOT set to 5/7.5 deg btdc at idle.. this will kill you engine..

Or use the ign and dist off a 1.9 wbx engine.. this is pretty close on the ign curve, dont use a 2L Aircooled one as the advance curve is different

Time the 1.9 wbx one to 5-7 deg btdc at idle (vac disconneted and plugged) and then make sure the vac unit is working when connected..

make sure the correct vac hose is used though as the CT had a duel vac advance unit and most DG's have a single one (oh and a normal beetle vac advance unit can be made to fit to the watercooled dist if need be..)

Oh CT is bad for the pre heat pipes blocking/rotting and not working, make sure there is some warm air getting to the carb from the exhaust.

CT is your engine code the 1st 2 letters of your engine number.. this IS very important as there are different engines CT = 1600 T25 only engine
(DG is the engine code of the 1.9 waterboxer)

1.9 DG wbx is the flat 4 water cooled (WaterBoXer) engine fitted to 1983 on T25's (the wbx also comes in 2.1 flavours too, but distributors not suitable)

BTDC = Before Top Dead Centre (standard automotive term..)

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly (Standard computer/internet term)

Where are you located??? I am in Slough at present..
Maybe there is a member near that can help out..

I am in W9 west london ,thats between queens park and westbourn park.
you are getting through to me -thank for your help its most appricaited .

Iam trying to get up to speed with the set ups but my starting point is very blurred, when I got the camper, all the vacuum hoses have been blocked -I dont have a clue about why or where they go.
but she runs fine occasionally.
but thats not reliable -
my experiance so far is that air cooled people are like gold dust,
and when you get a tip and go along to see them they pack you off several pounds lighter and then your back in the cold,
that what is so good about this club-
I know a guy Tony Rebello a back street mechanic in Kenton Harrow and he replaced all my cylinders and heads .
he said he would find me the bits salvage and sort it and it will be great,
the only thing is when
I want to get the parts fit them and drive on.
I dont want to make purchases and its all wrong.
I would really like to go somewhere and say check her out for me and advise how thing sould be and what improvemnts I can make etc
but Ive tried that at 3 places so far and they just charge me for an MOT type check.
what needed is someone you can consult with-a tune up expert,
they would say well-the good news is is not all bad and the bad news is it wont be ready until friday.
then they would tell me what they did and why and how I can keep it running.
I am an engineer so I could get my head around most of it.
what I am very impressed about is this baby goes with half the stuff missing or busted but she eats the juice .
sorry i am waffling GG-cheers

Well...
I can have a look.. got all my tools, but I dont have my timing light with me though... (may be able to borrow one!!)
If you could get out towards Slough with it... I have to be in work on Sunday.. could meet up for an hour... get you straightend out..

If you can get hold of a distributor etc by then, could fit as well, but prefer a look to see whats been screwed around wth before you spending more money...
