Hi there..My van...89, 2.1 petrol...has started to cut out when engine is cold...no idle. Once up and running it's fine.
Is this something sinister or something that an eejut such as myself could sort out ? Many thanks in advance..

Re: poor idle when cold
Less than a week ago, my van started doing this all of a sudden.
With the assistance of a knowledgable friend, we (to be honest, it was more like he), checked the choke mechanism on the carb was functioning correctly, had a look down the carb (confirmed that it was filthy), sucked on the vac/advance pipe which happened to be faulty in that he could suck air in and then confirmed this by checking the timing with the vac/advance pipe off.
All fingers lead to the vac/advance unit. Rather pleased with his diagnostics and theory as it's a simple enough item to replace (albeit expensive if you buy new).
However, the van has started and idled perfectly from cold since then and I've not changed anything yet. I'm still looking to replace things but a little less urgently..........soon be Christmas!!
My advice is to do the same as I've mentioned and see what happens. Less than half an hours work and enough time for a brew.
Others will be along soon to add to this I'm sure.
Fingers crossed.

Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

Doh! Injection you say. That's a different matter. Out of my depth here I'm afraid. Very surprised that nobody else has commented, even if it was only to point out my error! Don't fear, someone has got to help sooner or later.

Re: poor idle when cold
Usual suspect is the temp 2 sender on the thermostat

Re: poor idle when cold
Thanks for the reply...what is the the temp 2 sender and would it be listed on Brickwerks ?

Re: poor idle when cold
The Temp 2 sensor on a DJ injection, situated on the thermostat housing along with the temp sender, tells the ECU what temperature the engine is.
If it is broken, faulty or the connection is bad the ECU acts accordingly in adjusting the mixture.
Brickwerks have them but be sure to get the right one, they are usually coloured

Thanks for getting back...stupid question number 3.....how do I know what colour sensor to get...do I have to take the current one out and check or is there another way...?
