i have found a Automatic gearbox oil cooler supplier!
Hi all ,i have spent a couple of days trawling the web and phone book and after speaking to lots of experts in automatic gearboxes they mostly agree the new oil cooler versions are not the best and are prone to overheat.so i went back to my list and eventually found vw heritage (08458738328) who can supply a new cooler unit from germany for just under £200 delivered .it sounds dear but cheaper than a recon gearbox and should be good for 10 years plus.

are the gowesty ones not recommended? How often should you replace a gearbox oil cooler?

Can you please let me know who these experts are,i would be interested to speak to them, and to ask which oil coolers(i didnt realise there were any others apart from the gowesty one) are they saying overheat. The gowesty ones have a much larger cooling area,so i fail to see how they can be prone to overheating.

Re: i have found a Automatic gearbox oil cooler supplier!
According to what i was told the poor performance of the units is due to the pipe size not large enough to do the job when gearbox under high stress .there are other coolers out there but i think they are generic ones.the original cooler type should be changed every 10 years to be safe.

Can you let me know who told you please. The gowesty pipes are the same as the originals so these experts must be talking of some others.I would be interested to know what these are.I looked for ages for a dedicated ATF cooler and the gowesty one was all I could find.

They may have been talking of others i am no expert on these but as long as it is changed regular the original one should be fine for a good while.there are other kits out there as on the gowesty site it has a page saying why their kit is better .personally i will stick to the one designed by vw !!!

Re: i have found a Automatic gearbox oil cooler supplier!
The reason I asked you to tell me the name of these experts is because in all the years of owning an auto, I have found it very difficult to find anyone who properly understands these boxes. And a list of experts would be a very handy thing to have.

Re: i have found a Automatic gearbox oil cooler supplier!
Do you think it is possible to fabricate something for this job? Coolers are easy to get hold of, one like the go west version is about £60.00, a pair of hoses with an inline stat is another £60.00 so its just the fittings onto the gearbox that need to be sorted? How do these fittings work? Does the original use a bored out bolt like a banjo union bolt? If so surely a couple of suitable size banjo unions would work. Does anyone know how the old cooler attaches, whether it has hollow bolts or does the oil flow around narrower bolts?

Re: i have found a Automatic gearbox oil cooler supplier!
I,m no expert but your average engine oil cooler uses AN8 or AN10 fittings which use 10mm or 13 mm hose respectively. Ive just fitted one with AN10 fittings to my 1.9 DG It uses a 9 row cooler 12 inches long and 2 inches deep. When moving this knocks 10-15 degrees off my oil temp. The go westy type cooler should be slightly more efficient as I believe it passes the oil down the length 4 times before returning it on this basis 10MM hose should be sufficient and 13mm should be ample. Remember you are also increasing the volume of ATF by possibly 500ml or so which will aid cooling. So we just need to know how the original fits and seals and a kit can be made up off ebay!!!

Re: i have found a Automatic gearbox oil cooler supplier!
Thanks for that info it is very helpful . I will try to find some links to suitable parts and see if I can put together a kit for less than the cost of a go westy kit. Once I,ve fitted it to mine and proved it works I can properly advise on a club 80-90 solution to this problem!! I was planning on using an 80 degrees stat.
on first look, Mocal stat is £40.00, aluminium cooler dual pass is £40.00 or standard cooler type £25.00, hoses £15.00 and banjo unions and bolts £10.00 (depending on thread size) Thats about £100. I reckon that is pretty good I'll let you know in due course if it is a possibility.
